Stimpson, of Sydenham, supplied horses for watering, at a
contract price of 8s. 9d. per day, horse and man. In the Hamlet of
Penge the contract for the supply of horses and men for road
watering was let to Mr. Winnifrith, at 8s. per day for horse and
man. During the dry weather the supply of water at many of the
stand posts in the Lambeth Water Company's District was very
deficient, and I had to make several complaints to the Company.
An experiment was tried to water the roads between the Roebuck,
Lewisham, and Lee Bridge by means of a hose pipe. It was
found to be a slower and more expensive system of watering
than by the ordinary carts and wagons. Where there is much
traffic I believe it to be impossible to water by means of hose
pipes. I find upon enquiry that in towns in the north of England,
where the hose was used when I was a boy, it is now superseded
by the water cart. I am also informed the hose is only used in
Paris in the public gardens and unfrequented thoroughfares. The
Board purchased four hydrostatic wagons from Messrs. Bailey
during the year.
