IMPROVEMENTS.
Of special local Improvements effected during the year, that
of lowering West Hill, mentioned in the Board's last Annual
Report, has been completed, and this dangerously steep hill has
been reduced to a uniform gradient of nearly 1 in 15.
The negociations mentioned in the last year's Report as
being carried on with a view of effecting an Improvement at
Sydenham Green, have been continued throughout the year, and
although but little progress has been made, the Board have still
reason to believe their object will ultimately be obtained.
The entire severance of Sydenham as between the Sydenham
and Forest Hill Stations of the London and Brighton Railway,
has been long felt to be a serious inconvenience to the inhabitants
on either side, and they having subscribed a considerable sum
towards the cost of constructing a Footbridge over the line at
Park End, and obtained other facilities for carrying out the work,
the Board have undertaken its construction and maintenance,
subject to the consent of the Railway Company.
The most important road improvement undertaken in the
year is, however, the formation of a new road on the eastern side
of the London and Brighton Railway, from the bridge under the
same, a little north of the Forest Hill Station, in a direct line to
the corner of Park Road, Dartmouth Park. The Board have
succeeded in purchasing, by private contract, for £2,000, the
piece of ground across which the road will be formed; and they
believe they will be able to re-sell so much of the ground as .is
not required for their own purposes, at such an amount as will
enable them to effect the Improvement at a comparativelv small
cost.
ROAD WATERING.
fhe length of roads watered has been extended during the
present year in Lewisham from 80,253 to 39,728 yards, at a cost
increasing from £2,034 to £2,307—but in Penge the length of
roads is practically the same as during the previous year, and a
very trifling variation in the cost, the amount for the past year
having been £G74.
LIGHTING.
The same inconsistency continues between the prices charged
for supplying the public lamps by the Crystal Palace District Gas
