REPORT BY SURVEYOR OF HIGHWAYS
Of Works executed from Lady-day, 1871, to Lady-day, 1872.
Gentlemen,
Pursuant to your instructions I have the pleasure to
present my third Annual Report upon the Works carried out
in my department.
The total cost of the Highways in the Parish of Lewisham
for labour, cartage, material, &c., was £6,040 0s. 3d.,
including the sum of £1,422 15s. 4d. the expense of the
former New Cross Roads, and £1,102 10s. 6d. the cost of
laying Tar Pavement.
The total expenses of the Highways in Penge during the
year were £1,958 8s. 11d., for cartage, labour, material, &c.
The sum of £783 3s. 8d. for laying Tar Pavement is
included in this sum.

The following Table gives the quantities and description of material in cubic yards used and charged during the year.

Notwithstanding the excessively wet winter the Roads
and Footpaths are, on the whole, in a better condition than
they were, and are gradually improving.
