of the several inspectors appertain, districts are mapped out
comprising the streets in which the poor are congregated,
and the remainder of the time which the sanitary inspector
has at his disposal, when the other duties of the day are
completed, is spent in carrying into effcct those improvements
in the drainage and water supply, which may he
found necessary when passing from house to house in the
prescribed district.
Formerly the inspector considered that his duty had been
fulfilled, when he had abated the nuisance for the remedy of
which his attendance had been required; for example,
after the occurrence of a case of fever, when disinfection
had been carried out, and when the premises had been
cleansed, he considered that his duty in respect to that
house was at an end. But he does not now consider
that his duty has been discharged, although those matters
have been completed to his satisfaction, until the condition
of the drainage and water supply have been examined, and
until all structural defects in these systems have been
remedied and the house placed in a sanitary condition. It
may be observed that in this manner, during the last few
years, and especially during last year, a considerable increase
has taken place in the sanitary works which are of a
permanent character, and which must result ultimately in a
more healthy state of the parish.
