The inspection was commenced on December 5th, 1883, and
on April 5th, 1884, the provisional inspectors were discharged.
After each day's inspection the owners of property were served
with a formal notice to make the necessary improvements, and in
a large number of the houses the work was done without delay.
On April 7th I was able to report to your Sanitary Committee
that all the work had been done with the exception of 561 cases
of a minor character; these works have since been completed.
POPULATION.
The estimated population of the Parish of Lambeth, based upon
the number of inhabited houses and calculated at the middle of
the year to which this Report refers, is 262,827, showing an
increase of 688 above the estimated population of the previous
year.
The percentage of inmates of houses in the various districts
remain so constant that the population may be estimated in a
fairly accurate manner.
The average number of inhabitants in each house in the
metropolis in the census of 1861 stood at 9.8; it stood at the same
figure in the census of 1871; and did not vary one decimal point
in 1881.
The number of inhabited houses in each registration district,
with the average percentage of inmates, based upon the census of
1881, is given below.
