REPAIRS TO HIGHWAYS, NEW WORKS,
AND IMPROVEMENTS.
General Repairs.—The whole of the Roads and Streets
under the charge of the Vestry have been, from time to time,
carefully attended to by the staff employed ; and repaired with
materials most requisite and applicable to the localities of such
Roads and Streets.
Watering and Cleansing Roads, &c.—These Works
have been carried out by contract, and the same system adopted
as in previous seasons, and which, from experience, affords the
greatest satisfaction to the Ratepayers.
NEW WORKS AND IMPROVEMENTS.
The following Works have been carried out during the past
year, as recommended by the General Purposes Committee,
and approved by Vestry.
Cheltenham Place.—The footway from Oakley Street to
Burdett Street taken up, lowered, and re-laid with present old
materials, and made good with new 2½-in. York ; the old Yorkshire
kerb or brickwork removed, being much dilapidated, and new
12-in. x 8-in. Aberdeen granite kerb substituted. A moiety of the
cost of this work was paid by Messrs. Maudslay & Co. The
carriageway has also been raised to an uniform level from Oakley
Street to the boundary, and coated with broken Guernsey granite
throughout.
Cleaver Street, Kennington Cross.—New 12-in. x
6-in. Devon flat kerb, and the footways re-laid, and repaired
with new 2½ in. York paving.
Park Street, (Western End).—New Purbeck kerb, and
the footways made up, regulated, and faced with fine gravel.
Catherine Street.—New Purbeck kerb, with new 2½-in.
York paving laid from the doorways of the houses to the line of
kerb, and the footways regulated and faced with fine gravel.
