which were practically all occupied in 1921, and in
addition 300 new houses and 7 large blocks of tenements
were built during the ten years. These would accommodate
more than the additional population, so that
although probably there are more cases of gross overcrowding
than there were ten years ago, a certain
proportion of the population must be living under better
conditions as regards house accommodation than was
formerly the case.
Marriages.—The number of marriages registered was
1,477, and the marriage-rate, i.e., the number of persons
married per 1,000 of the population, was 18.5. In the
three preceding years the marriages numbered 1,471,
1,659 and 1,601.
Births.—The births, corrected by the distribution of
those occurring in lying-in institutions in the borough to
the districts in which the mothers resided, and the inclusion
of children born to Fulham mothers in institutions
outside the borough, numbered 3,528, of whom 1,824
were boys and 1,704 were girls. The birth rate was
22.1 per 1,000 inhabitants, being 5 per 1,000 below that
of 1920.
Illegitimacy.—The illegitimates numbered 159 or
4.5 per cent, of the total births, against 8.4, 6.5 and 4.8
per cent. in the three preceding years.
Natural Increase of the Population.— The natural
increase of the population by excess of births over deaths
was 1,662, against 181, 1,098 and 2,501 in the three
preceding years.
Deaths.—During the 52 weeks ended December 31st,
1,865 deaths were registered in the borough. Of these
381 were of persons not belonging to the borough, while
382 inhabitants of Fulham died outside the borough
chiefly in various public institutions. There were, there
fore, 1,864 deaths of persons, 904 males and 960 females,
having their usual residence in Fulham, representing an
