hospital, seagrave road
As there is a large Fever Hospital in Seagrave Road, the Sewage of
which of course passes through this district, I think that representations
should be made to the Metropolitan Asylums Board, asking
them to thoroughly deodorize all sewage from the Hospital before it
reaches our sewers.
STABLES IN DISTRICT
I also recommend that the owners of large stables where peat moss
litter is used be called upon to use these disinfectants.
temperature of atmosphere and sewers.
The Vestry should know that it is more imperative to use these
chemicals at those times when the temperature of the external
atmosphere is higher than the temperature in the sewers. This
chiefly occurs during the six hottest months of the year, viz., April
May, June, July, August, and September. The temperature in the
sewers is found to be very equable throughout the year, and may be
taken at 52°.
conclusion.
It must be understood that the recommendations in this report
are in addition to those already made in the preceding report on
sewers, as the carrying out of this scheme in its entirety would not
affect my previous recommendations, which chiefly have reference to
the construction of the sewers.
I wish to express here my obligation to Mr. W. J. Dibdin, the
Chemist, and many other officers of the London County Council, for
much of the information I have utilized in this report.
I remain, Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
JAMES P. NORRINGTON, A.M.I.C.E.,
Surveyor to the Vestry.
Since my appointment, 170 large ventilating manhole covers
have been fixed to the existing sewers in the Parish, exclusive of
those fixed to new sewers and streets taken over, and 11 shafts have
been carried up the sides or fronts of houses in order to otain
additional ventilation to the sewers. During the year, 13 new manholes
have been built to existing sewers.
DRAINAGE.
The proper construction of the drainage of houses, has continued
to occupy a great deal of the attention of the Vestry during the year
and the supervision of the work has been much increased. The water
test is applied to each drain and it is not covered in unless perfectly
water-tight.
