"The outfall will be the brick sewer in King's Eoad, 4.ft. 6-in. by
3-ft."
" My estimate of the cost of the new sewer is £3,500, and the
necessary plans have been commenced."
north end road sewer.
Many complaints are received of offensive odours arising from the
ventilators of this sewer, which brings through the whole length of
the North End Road the sewage from a great part of Hammersmith,
and joins the Harwood Road at Walham Green:—
This sewer is insufficiently ventilated, the present distance apart of
ventilators averaging 348-ft., whereas I have always recommended
them being placed from 180 to 200-ft. apart.
A portion of the sewer is, as the Vestry had pointed out by a
section submitted to them in 1888, depressed from the end of Talgarth
Eoad to Gibb's Green. The current through this portion in dry
weather is at the rate of a mile and a half an hour, which is equal to
2.2 feet per second, and twice as rapid a flow as a 12-in. pipe sewer,
¾ full with a fall of 1 in 100. This part of the sewer has never failed
to do its duty, and the flow is sufficient to keep the sewer clear,
although there is a deposit of clean grit and sand at the bottom of the
depressed portion.
I do not propose to rccommend the Vestry to re-construct this
portion of the sewer until I have an opportunity of examining it in
detail. This can only be done by constructing a flushing chamber and
penstock just above the depressed portion, the sewer can then be
entered, the condition of it examined, and it can also be cleared
periodically.
A chamber and penstock can be constructed at a cost of ±'60, and
I recommend the work to be carried out at once.
Additional ventilators should also be constructed at suitable
distances, and shafts erected wherever possible.
As this, however, drains two Parishes, the London County Council
might be approached with a view of their taking over the control of
it as a main sewer, but the work recommended should not be delayed
on that account.

An old barrel drain in Vernon Street which discharges into a 12-in.

There are six dead ends in this street, each of which should have
a manhole and ventilator.

I recommend that the Eoad Car Company should be requested to
provide a grating and catchpit to their drains to prevent the peat
