During the past year the expense of getting rid of the dust has
become a serious item. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners stopped the
Vestry tipping at the Bishop's Meadow or on the Ranelagh Estate
and the Vestry were therefore compelled to barge it away at a cost of
2s. 9d. per load; since then numerous shoots have been utilised at
prices varying from Is. 6d. to 2s. 6d. per load.
Tipping into shoots near houses or near where houses will be
built is very objectionable, but I should think it would not be difficult
to find some place intended to be retained permanently as a Park or
Garden, and in that case I do not think any injury would arise.
I have presented numerous reports on the disposal of the dust
during the year, and I reproduce a few extracts concerning the chief
schemes.
Extract from Report re Destructor.
"September 26th, 1887.
"The quantity of 12,000 loads per annum is very nearly the same
"as that of the Parish of Whitechapel, and the expenses incurred by
"that District will, therefore, form a guide for the consideration of this
"Committee, although I hope before the question is settled that the
"Committee, together with myself, will have an opportunity of examin"ing
existing Destructors and determining accurately the cost of making
"them and other details.
"The Surveyor to the Vestry of Whitechapel, Mr, W. La Riviere,
"states that the total cost of the Destructor, Site and Buildings con"nected
therewith to be £13,000.
"The annual cost of burning 40 loads (about 50 tons) per day,
"working day and night, is £700.
"Taking, therefore, the capital outlay required for erecting a similar
"Destructor in Fulham to be £12,000 (I believe a larger saving than
" £1,000 can be made in cost of Site, Buildings, &c.), the annual cost
" will amount to
" 3½ per cent. interest on £12,000 £420
"Annual cost of working 700
Total £1,120
“This amount deducted from £1,500 (the least annual cost of
“baaging dust), shews an annual saving of £380 in favour of using a
"Destructor or Cremator."
Extract from Report of November 22nd. 1887.
“I beg to submit below a Table showing the estimated relative cost
"per annum of each scheme.
