Restaurants and Eating Houses.
There were 163 restaurants and eating houses on the Register
at the end of the year under review.
The number of visits made to these premises was 242, and
11 notices were served and complied with to remedy insanitarv
conditions.
Street Markets.
During the year the Food Inspector made 872 visits of inspection
to the various street markets in the Borough. The total
visits and inspections to these and other food premises, excluding
those specifically referred to, numbered 3,653.
Maggots in Oranges
In May my attention was drawn to the maggoty condition
of some oranges purchased by a person in this Borough for her
sick child. It was stated that as the result of squeezing one of
the oranges a number of maggots were found in the juice. The
juice and the pulp of the orange from which it was extracted,
together with another orange of the same purchase, were brought
by the purchaser to this Department for inspection. The last
mentioned orange, which appeared to be perfectly sound, was also
found on examination to contain a number of live maggots. The
matter was brought to the notice of the Ministry of Agriculture
and Fisheries, who requested that the oranges and maggots be
forwarded to them for examination by the officers of their
Department. This request was complied with, and the following
is a copy of the report which was subsequently received:—
I am directed to refer to your letter of the 15th instant and
to say that the maggots found in the oranges forwarded therewith
have been identified as the larvae of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly
(Ceratitis capitata), an insect which has frequently been found in
imported fruit.
It is not included in any Order made by the Minister under
the Destructive Insects and Pests Acts, 1877 to 1927."
Swine Fever.
An outbreak of swine fever occurred in December at Constance
Road Institution. In accordance with the provisions of
the Diseases of Animals Act, the L.C.C. Veterinary Inspector
was notified and the outbreak confirmed. A number of pigs were
found to be contagious and were destroyed on the premises. The
remaining stock was sent to the Corporation Abattoirs at Islington
for slaughter.
Slaughter-houses.
There are two slaughter-houses in the Borough, and
slaughtering took place at these premises on 146 occasions during
the year; the visits of inspection numbered 158. The number
