The point in question rose in this wise:—This neighbourhood
is a peculiar one. It is not by any means
entirely urban in its character, neither is it of course
entirely rural, and all who consider the method which
should be adopted in dealing with Streets under the Acts,
are, of course, aware that the treatment adopted must
necessarily be modified, in order that such may harmonise
with the character of the Road, Street, or District. This
would be true on whomsoever the burthen of the construction
may fall, whether public funds or private purse.
My Directors accordingly requested one of their colleagues,
Mr. John G. Rhodes, to seek an interview with your
Honourable Vestry, so that the views of my Board may be
fully brought under their notice, and in the hope that
some mutually advantageous conclusion may be arrived at.
I am therefore instructed to ask that your Vestry will
be pleased to receive Mr. Rhodes as a Deputation from my
Board at your next Meeting on the 16th instant, for the
purpose above referred to.
I need scarcely add that there is not the most distant
intention of importing what is now asked for into the
questions of law which are open between my Board and
your Honourable Vestry.
Yours faithfully,
W. GARDINER,
Secretary.
Mr. Rhodes addressed the Vestry in support of the
views of the Crystal Palace Company, asking for a revision
of the apportionment.
