passed into Law, we renewed our application to the Estates
Governors, and they were good enough to confirm their
former resolution of the gift and submitted it to the Charity
Commissioners for their approval in accordance with the
requirements of the Act, and the Governors received a reply
stating that the Land proposed to be given as a site for a
Public Library is situated on the outermost limit of the
Estate having regard to the fact that the grant is supposed
to be made by way of free gift on the part of the Charity
and to the corresponding advantages which may be expected
to be derived by the surrounding district from the establishment
of a Public Library, they requested to be furnished with
an explanation of the circumstance in which the junction of
Woodwarde Road and Lordship Lane had been selected in
preference both to the more central and more populous portions
of the Estates.
The Governors have applied to the Commissioners for
reasons which might be given in favour of the site, in
order to remove the difficulties raised by the Charity Commissioners,
and the following is a copy of the letter which we
directed to be sent to the Governors:—
"Vestry Hall, Camberwell.
"June 10th, 1891.
"Sir,
"I am directed by the Commissioners of Public
Libraries and Museums to reply to the letter from the
Charity Commissioners of the 10th of April last addressed
to you in which the Commissioners are requested to furnish
an explanation of the circumstances in which the junction
