OF THE COMMISSIONERS
OF
PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS.
In presenting our Annual Report we have pleasure in
recording the fact that four Lending Libraries were opened
in the Parish of Camberwell during the past twelve months.
It was in March, 1890, that the first Reading Room
was opened at the temporary premises, 20, High Street,
Peckham, and this was followed by the opening of the
Lending Department on June 16th. The Minet Library,
the gift of Mr. William Minet to the inhabitants of Camberwell
and Lambeth, was opened in July, 1890, particulars
of which were given in our last Report. On October
18th the Library given by Mr. George Livesey to Camberwell,
was opened by Sir Edward Clarke, Q.C., M.P., on
which occasion Mr. Livesey handed the deed of gift to
Mr. G. C. Whiteley, Chairman of the Camberwell Library
Commissioners. The building comprises a large news room,
lending department, magazine, club and committee rooms,
with apartments for the acting librarian.
It was further decided to provide a temporary Library
for East Dulwich, and premises were rented at 130 and 132,
Lordship Lane. The necessary alterations having been
made, and the requisite books purchased, the Library was
