The first point to be noted is the narrow width of Rye
Lane, especially nearest High Street, Peckham, and
which is indicated on the plan thus:—A ABB; in this
length there will be a less width than 9 ft. 6 in. from the
kerb to the outer Tramway rail, and at a part of the road
where most traffic occurs. Further, it is proposed that
the double line for the passing of cars, shall occur at a
point about central (in length), opposite the front of
Hanover Chapel, there will thus be a double line for
about three chains, half the length in Rye Lane and the
remainder in the High Street, opposite the "Kentish
Drovers" P.H., and immediately impinging on the existing
lines of Tramway to and from New Cross.
The difficulties to maintain the increasing traffic of
this particular locality, subject to the working of the
proposed Tramway will be very great, and will require
very earnest consideration by the Vestry.
This proposed double line could be obviated by an
arrangement for a junction (and mutual working) with
the present Tramway in Peckham High Street.
Another objection to this line occurs at the narrow
portion of this roadway, between Choumert Road and
Peckham Rye, which has been attempted to be removed
by the Tramway Company scheduling property to be
purchased for the purpose of this Tramway; this is a
spot which it has always been considered advisable to
widen; if this be carried out, a junction can be then
formed with the recently constructed (but as yet unopened)
line of Tramway at the upper end of Rye Lane.
