and of its Sub-districts, as enumerated at the
Census of 1881, as the populations for the year
1881 (Table II). For the previous years I have
in every case ascertained the actual increase of
population which took place between 1871 and
1881, and have added to the population of 1871
a tenth part of this total increase for each year
which has elapsed since 1871 (Table XIII). The
method is open to objection, and no doubt does
not give quite accurate results, but I know that
the results are at least as accurate as any that
could be obtained by other available methods.
