will show that daring this period 13299 houses have
been inspected, and that at least 2578 re-inspections
have been also performed; that these inspections have
led to the issue of 4314 Notices, and only 46 Summonses;
and that at the end of the year not more
than 186 Notices had been uncomplied with. I need
not enter into the details of the works executed, for
most of them were of the ordinary kind, and are
sufficiently explained by the headings under which
they are placed. I may point out, however, that the
visitations of infectious diseases, which were very
numerous, and the consequent numerous cases of
disinfection of bedding and houses, occurred largely
during the months of January, February, and March,
1881—months during which small-pox prevailed, but
the vital statistics of which are not included in the
present Report. And I may state further, that it
seems, that although the Metropolitan Board of
TVorks make regulations with respect to the arrangement
under which slaughter-houses and dairies are to
be carried on, and their construction, they do not
deem it necessary to insist on their requirements being
carried out; and that it was solely by our action that
one slaughter-house and one cow-house were refused
licenses, and the licenses for two cow-houses were
withheld until the regulations of the Board of Works
had been complied with.
