the population of the Parish was not one third of
what it now is, and that in order to compare the
relative mortality of that year and of the year 1859,
it would be necessary to multiply the deaths of 1856
by at least 3; and that even as regards 1871, the
population then was possibly 40,000 or 50,000 less
than it is at the present time.
Hooping Cough caused 122 deaths in 1879
against 206 in 1878; the deaths were 33 in the first
quarter, 30 in the second, 18 in the third, and 51 in
the fourth. The deaths from Measles rose from 88
in 1878 to 123 in 1879; of these, 30 occurred in the
first quarter, 58 in the second, 18 in the third, and
17 in the last Diphtheria, which had caused 29
deaths in 1878, caused 31 in 1879; 5 cases occurred
in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 3 in the third,
and 10 in the fourth. Scarlet Fever caused 76 deaths
or 17 more than in the previous year. Of these, 17
occurred in the first quarter, 7 in the second, 16 in
the third, and 36 in the fourth. Fever was less fatal
in 1879 than in 1878 by 6 cases. The deaths due to
this cause were 35 only, of which 6 occurred in the
first quarter, 8 in the second, 9 in the third, and 12
in the last. Small-pox caused 79 deaths in place of
