ROAD WATERING and SLOPPING.
In page 12 of last year's Report it was announced
that " your Committee having, for several years past,
found that this work had not been carried out to the
satisfaction of the Ratepayers, gave the subject much
consideration; and, in preparing the Contracts for
1876-7, resolved to recommend the Vestry to make
the experiment of executing a portion of such work
without the aid of Contractors.
"For this purpose permission of the Vestry was
obtained to purchase Horses, Carts, etc., for carrying
out the work of Division E—viz., the Peckham Rye
and Nunhead District; this course was the more
especially recommended as the Contract amounts
on the last occasion for tendering for the several
districts were much in excess of those of previous
years."
Of this permission your Committee availed
themselves, and the twelve months' experience in
carrying out this section of the work fully realised
the anticipations foreshadowed in last year's Report.
