details of these examinations here, I may state that both
the Southwark and Vauxhall and the Lambeth waters
were on several occasions turbid from imperfect filtration.
And I may mention, also, that according to Dr.
Frankland's examinations, the Kent Company's water
during February and March, 1868, contained an unsually
large quantity of solid impurity, which he can
only explain on the assumption of contamination from a
tidal river; and that a similar and similarly explicable
increase of impurity was observed in the water
of the Southwark and Yauxhall Company in August,
September, and October. Of the three waters, that
supplied by the Southwark and Yauxhall Company
has been on the whole considerably the worst.
I cannot close this report without expressing my
belief that the Inspectors of Nuisances have during
the past year, as I believe they have always hitherto
done, worked honestly and well in the performance of
their multifarious duties, and thanking you, Gentlemen,
for the unfailing kindness with which you continue
to reward my efforts in your service.
I remain, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J. S. BRISTOWE.
