MAIN ROADS.
In June of 1880, the Vestry pointed out to the London County
Council that to alter the arrangement for maintenance of main
roads, by the Council taking over such roads, would inflict hardship
on the poorer Parishes and on those not centrally situated. As a
precaution an application was made as mentioned in the last
Report, that the Council should declare certain roads in the
Parish to be main roads. In May of 1890, the Council wrote
that having considered the application, the Council was "of
opinion that there if not probable cause for such application, and
declines to accede to it." The application by the other Parishes in
the County of London were dealt with in the same way, so the
views of the Vestry as to main roads have practically been adopted.
OPENING MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES
ON SUNDAYS.
The East London Sunday Opening Association asked the support
of the Vestry to a Resolution to bo moved in the House of
Commons by Mr. H. L. W. Lawson, in favour of Sunday
Opening of National Museums and Art Galleries, and with
special reference to Bethnal Green Museum. A Resolution was
passed expressing the opinion of the Vestry that it is most
desirable that the National Museums and Art Galleries should be
open to the Public on Sundays, and especially their sense of the
expediency of opening on Sundays the Bethnal Green Museum.
Mr. Lawson wrote thanking the Vestry for the Resolution, a copy
of which had been sent to him.
LOCAL PETTY SESSIONS.
A Memorial was presented by Mr. Kyffen and others, who
attended as a Deputation, asking the Vestry to consider as to
making arrangements for the holding of Petty Sessions by Local
Justices, for disposing of Civil Cases arising out of Sanitary,
Paving, and other matters under the jurisdiction of the Vestry.
