Housing of the Working Classes Act
(Port 2).
The Act came into operation in August, 1800, and from that
date to the present month (August 1801), 122 houses have been
certified by me as unfit for human habitation. The certificates
were in each instance laid before the Vestry, and by them referred
to the Sanitary Committee to view and report upon. Every house
was carefully inspected by the Committee, and in every instance
(except one) my certificate was confirmed, and a report was sent
up to the Vestry recommending that proceedings should be taken
to obtain closing orders. Summonses under the Nuisances Removal
Act were accordingly taken out, and 86 of the houses were closed
by Magistrate's orders, two summonses were dismissed, 10 have
been part heard, and 16 houses have been closed by the owners
without legal proceedings. Out of the whole number, 6 houses
have been repaired and re-opened, and 44 have been demolished.
