Proceedings of the Vestry of the Parish of St. Matthew, Dethnal
Green, from the 25th March, 1890, to the 25th March, 1891.
SCAVENGING, REMOVAL OF DUST, AND
WATERING ROADS.
The subject of the Contracts for the performance of the work
was referred to a Special Committee, consisting of the members of
the Works and Sanitary Committees.
The Committee reported, recommending the adoption of some
suggested alterations in the specification of the work, and that
tenders bo invited for one, two, or three years, and that the
advertisements should state that the porsons contracting would be
required to sign an undertaking to pay their employés the standard
rates of wages current in the trade. The Report was adopted, and
tenders advertised for. The tenders were considered by a Committee
of the whole Vestry, and in accordance with the recommendation
of the Committee, the tender for one year by Mr. Crane for District
No. 1, at £1838, and the tenders for one year by Mr. Stevens for
Districts Nos. 2 and 3, at respectively £1800, were accepted, and
Mr. Crane and Mr. Stevens were contracted with accordingly.
In July, the Sanitary Committee recommended the purchase of
500 more galvanized iron dust pails, to provide houses which had
not then been supplied, and to enable householders to purchase, at
cost price, additional pails, to make good losses, &c. The recommendation
was adopted, tenders advertised for, and that by Messrs.
James Gibb & Co., of Fenchurch Street, at £62 10s., accepted.
In November, the Contractor for Districts Nos. 2 and 3 was
fined £4 for neglect in carting away slop.
