remaining out being extended. One petition purported to be signed
by ratepayers, and the others by customers of stall-keepers. The
recommendation of the Committee was adopted.
Subsequently two deputations attended the Vestry, one to present
a copy of resolutions passed at a "meeting of ratepayers, shopkeepers,
costermongers, and stall-keepersand the other from
shop-keepers in Brick lane, to request the use till noon on Sundays
of stall boards, and that pending summonses for non-compliance
with the Regulations might be permitted to stand over. The
applications made by the two deputations were referred to the
Streets Regulations Committee, with an instruction that all
summonses, &c., be not proceeded with until the consideration by
the Vestry of the Report of the Committee.
The Committee reported (1) they were unable to recommend any
alterations in the Regulations, and were of opinion the existing
Regulations should be enforced. (2) That after full discussion of
the application by the ratepayers of Brick lane to be allowed
on Sundays to remain till twelve trading in the streets, the Committee
regret they cannot agree to it, and hope the ratepayers will
conform to the Regulations.
Clause 1 of the Report was approved and adopted. Clause 2 of
the Report was considered at two subsequent meetings, and was
ultimately approved and adopted.
On the 25th January, there was presented to, and received by
the Vestry, the following:—
REPORT OF THE STREETS REGULATIONS COMMITTEE.
In consequence of the Street Inspector not having been elected until the 21st
July, it was not possible to proceed to require the regulations being carried out on
the 1st of June, the day named in the regulations for their coming into force. The
time was therefore altered to the 15th of August, and notices of such extension of
time were circulated through the whole of the parish between the 4 th and 14 th
of August. The notices with reference to Sunday mornings were circulated
between the 6th and 14th of August. The Inspector found that they were complied
with fairly well, and have been continuing to improve, more especially recently.
It will be observed from the Return made by the Inspector that great delays
arise in getting summonses heard at the Police Court in consequence of the pressure
of business necessitating frequent adjournments.
