This total indicates a marriage rate of 18.76 to every thousand
persons; or, as in each marriage there are two contracting parties,
37.52 per thousand of our population entered the bonds of matrimony
during the past year.
Fifty-seven of these weddings were purely civil contracts, and
required the presence of the Registrar. Twenty-four of them took
place in chapels, and thirty-three at the Registrar's Office.
The rate for London was 16.6 persons married to 1000 Inhabitants.
This is the lowest marriage rate as yet recorded in London ;
the three next lowest moreover, being those recorded in the three
immediately preceding years, 1883-4-5, in which the rates were
successively, 17. 9, 17.6 and 16.9.
DEATHS OF INFANTS.
Nearly 30 per cent, of the deaths from all causes were those of
infants aged less than twelve months, for out of 5194 children born,
888 died before reaching the age of one year, leaving only 4,306
who attained that age. This gives a death rate calculated upon
the births of 171.0, or of 6.8 per thousand population at all ages.
The diseases most fatal to infants were:— Inflammatory Chest
Diseases, 157; Diarrhoea, 116; Atrophy and Debility, 107; Convulsions,
95; Consumption of Bowels, 56; Whooping Cough, 55 ;
Hydrocephalus and Diseases of Brain, 38.
DEATHS OF YOUNG- CHILDREN.
As usual nearly half the deaths (1513, equal that is to 49.77 per
cent.) were those of young children aged less than five years.
Assuming that the proportion of young children to adults has
been maintained since the last census, the number of young children
in 1886 would be 19,830. Upon this estimated population we
shew a death rate of 76.32.
