DEATHS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
As usual nearly half the deaths (1213, equal, that is, to 42.5 per
cent.) were those of young children aged less than five years.
Assuming the proportion of young children to adults to have
been maintained since the last census, the number of young children
in 1885 would be 19,700 ; upon this estimated population we shew
a death rate of 61.57.
