LEGAL PROCEEDINGS.
Most of the cases taken to "Worship Street were for the removal of
nuisances; they were of the ordinary character, and require no special
comment.
UNSOUND FOOD.
In March a large quantity of soles were seized by Mr. W. W.
Burrows at Columbia Market, where they were exposed for sale.
The owner was summoned and fined five pounds, or a month's imprisonment
in default; as defendant was unable to pay the fine, he
went to prison.
In August Mr. Lapworth seized three boxes of haddocks, two of
gurnards, and one of plaice; these had been consigned to Columbia
market, and were in a putrid condition.
A quantity of tins of putrid salmon which were exposed for sale in
the streets by a costermonger were seized by Mr. Lapworth and condemned
by the magistrate at Worship Street. The seller was fined
forty shillings.
A large quantity of unsound fruit and vegetables were also seized by
the inspectors; but as they were not on sale, no proceedings were
taken.
PUBLIC MORTUARY.
One hundred and one bodies have found a temporary resting place
within the walls of our mortuary. The repairs and alterations referred
to in my last report have not yet been carried out, but will I trust
be very shortly in progress.
WATER SUPPLY.
"The East London Water Company now gives a constant supply of
water to 145,078 services.
Filter Beds.—The filtering establishment of this Company is now
complete.
The well which was sunk some time since into the chalk at
Walthamstow is being examined, and a new boring is being put
down at Chingford with the view of obtaining an auxiliary supply of
water from the chalk.
The supply of this Company is drawn from the impoundingreservoirs
at all times, and the intake is closed during floods.
