The opinion of the "Vestry is that the powers they have are
substantially sufficient, without having recourse to the costly and
difficult proceedings (often entailing litigation) under the Artizans'
and Labourers' Dwellings Acts.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Petitions have been presented to both Houses of Parliament in
favour of extending the provisions for the protection of young girls.
The Vestry have refused to accede to applications for compensation
for damage alleged to have been caused by the influx of sewage from
a drain in Old Ford Eoad, and for damage to a horse and "trap,"
alleged to have arisen from a hole having sunk in the carriageway of
Cyprus Street, and for injuries alleged to have been sustained by a
young woman slipping off the kerb in Turin Street.
A letter was received from the Vestry of Hampstead, protesting
against any further expenditure of the ratepayers' money iu further
contesting, in the Court of Law, the case about the Hampstead
Hospital. A copy was also received of the reply of the Chairman of
the Asylums' Board to the allegations and inferences of the Hampstead
Vestry. The Vestry, after considering the letter and the reply, were
of opinion that if the Hospital be carried on, on the lines laid down by
the Royal Commission, there is no reason why it should be closed, and
that it ought to be kept open, and decided that the Asylums' Board
and the Vestry of Hampstead be informed accordingly.
A urinal has been erected under the railway bridge crossing
Wheeler Street.
The steam roller was sent to the makers to be repaired at an
estimated cost of £68.
In March, Mr. William Eichardson, who had been a Member of the
Vestry for many years, died.
Mr. Gathercole, the late Surveyor, left (as had been previously
arranged) on tho 25th March, 1884.
ROBERT VOSS,
Vestry Clerk.
