receive from the Metropolitan Board of Works the moiety of the £600
agreed to be contributed by that Board. The parts in this parish of
the foot and carriageway under the bridge have been repaved and
completed by paving the carriageway with granite cubes on concrete,
and the footways with New York paving. A very short time since,
this great improvement seemed a thing in the comparatively distant
future. Its accomplishment is matter for congratulation.
THAMES COMMUNICATION.
In April, Messrs. Stoneley, Smither, Hilditch, Jacobs, and Jones,
were, on the invitation of the Vestry of Mile End, appointed to attend
a Conference on the subject of "Vehicular communication from North
to South East of London Bridge." At an adjourned meeting of the
Conference, held at the Cannon Street Hotel, it was resolved that a
deputation should wait on the Metropolitan Board of Works, to confer.
In November, Messrs, Abbott, Pickard, Thurgood, Wright, Loveday,
Pitt, and Staines, were appointed a Committee to confer with other
Vestries and District Boards, with the Thames Communication Committee,
and the Corporation of the City of London, in order to support
the proposal to form a tunnel from Shadwell to Rotherhithe, and to
take all necessary steps to secure that communication, and to report to
the Vestry.
In December, Messrs. Abbott, Pickard, Thurgood, Wright, Loveday,
Pitt, and Staines, were also appointed delegates, to confer with
delegates from the Limehouse Board, Hackney, Shoreditch, Mile End,
Poplar, St. George's, and Whitechapel, upon the subject of the proposed
Tunnel at Nightingale Lane, suggested by the Metropolitan Board of
Works. The Conference of Delegates passed a resolution, expressing
an opinion that the Nightingale Lane Tunnel Scheme as submitted to
Parliament by the Metropolitan Board of Works, is altogether unsuitable
for the purposes alleged as regards the approaches and convenience
of vehicular traffic, and that the same ought to be abandoned, and that
if the scheme were not abandoned it should be opposed by the several
districts by every means in their power. The Vestry approved of the
action of the conference, and of a memorial to be presented to the
Metropolitan Board of Works.
