PUTRID PROVISIONS.
In March, some premises in the occupation of a provision dealer
in Reuben street, consisting of a coach-house and stable, were
visited, and 13 pigs were found kept in a most filthy condition. Upon
these premises were found a quantity of putrid provisions, consisting
of several casks of pickled tongues, tins of preserved Australian meat,
and a number of hams and cheeses, in all weighing about 15 hundredweight.
The pigs were being fed with a portion of this putrid stuff.
The whole was seized and submitted to Mr. Bushby.
The defendant, in his sworn evidence, declared that it was not his
intention to offer these articles for sale for human food, but that he
was about to dispose of them for fat melting. Mr. Bushby gave the
man the benefit of the doubt, and made no order.
DISEASED MEAT.
In October the carcase of a sheep was found in a stable in Swan
street, in the occupation of a butcher, who keeps a stall in Brick lane.
I inspected the meat and found it to be in an unsound and diseased
condition. It was accordingly submitted to Mr. Hannay, who condemned
it and made an order for its destruction.
The owner was summoned to Worship street and fined £10. Mr.
Hannay gave notice that in the next case of this nature brought before
him he would send the defendant to prison without the option of a fine.
