Mean Temperature
for Year
1883.
The weather during the year was somewhat exceptional: the early
part was unusually warm, the summer was cold and unseasonable, and
the latter part of the year very variable. January was very mild,
having a mean temperature of 40.4; there was less rain than usual,
and the ordinary north and north-easterly-winds were comparatively
absent. February and March were similarly mild; in April the
weather was warm and rainy; May was warm and dry, with less rain
than usual; June was cold, with a temperature nearly three degrees
lower than the average, and very little rain fell. July and August
were both cold months, as was September. October was warmer than
usual, and November was an average month, as was December. During
October the rain-fall, four-and-a-half inches, was greater than in any
other month, and snow fell on the 24th. In November the rainfall
was three inches, and in September two-and-a-half inches.
The highest temperature recorded during the year was 83.2 degrees,
and was reached in the month of August; the lowest was 24.6 in
December.
The mean temperature of the year was about one degree higher than
in 1881, but the rainfall was very nearly the same.
