As will be seen by an inspection of Table A, the data for which have
been kindly furnished me by the rate collectors, we have this year 17,739
houses assessed : precisely the same number as last year. Since that
period, however, a number of small houses have been demolished, and
larger ones erected in their places ; so that the house-room, if not the
actual number of dwellings, is considerably increased.
The extent of the parish is 755 acres, and each acre has an average
population of 169.5 persons, and each house of 7.2 inhabitants.
BIRTHS AND DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered in this parish during the year was
3,094 against 3,054 last year—an increase of 40. This number,
however, includes 128 non-parishioners who had been placed for
purposes of medical treatment in the various public institutions within
our bounds. These non-residents I have included in the total deaths
to compensate for the deaths of those of our own parishioners who
died in other metropolitan hospitals, but the exact number of whom I
have in past years had no means of ascertaining.
I am happy to say that, in future reports, I shall be able to state
the exact numbers of extra parochial deaths; as, owing to the
representations of Mr. Shirley Murphy, the Medical Officer of Health
for St. Pancras, Mr. Noel Humphreys, of the General Register Office,
has consented to furnish Medical Officers of Health with particulars of
all deaths in public institutions situated beyond the limits of their
districts; thus enabling them to make their statistical returns more
accurate and of greater value than heretofore.
I receive these returns monthly, and am able to utilize them in
making out my periodical reports for the monthly meetings of the
Vestry. I have decided to discontinue the weekly printed returns, and
to substitute a four or five-weekly one, containing some statistics of
mortality and other information.
The births during the year were 5,256 against 5,237 in the preceding
year. The excess of the births over the deaths was 2,162—21 fewer
than in the preceding year, as is shewn by the subjoined table.
