time to be lost, for it frequently happened that after waiting two or
three hours, the cases were adjournead. The work done in compliance
with notices served, was 1,210 houses cleansed and purified, 1,342 cases
of defective drainage remedied, 11 cesspools abolished, 4 new closets
provided, 1,574 closets were purified, 96 urinals were cleansed, 1,124
accumulations of dung and other offensive matter were removed, 217
animals were removed in consequence of being a nuisance and injurious
to health, 96 cases of fever and small pox were visited, disinfectants
supplied, and notices served on owners to have the houses cleansed and
disinfected, many infected beds with bedding were destroyed. The want
of a proper place to destroy them was keenly felt by the Inspectors, for
wherever they went great objections were raised, and they had to wait
until the inhabitants of the neighbourhood were in bed before they could
perform their disagreeable task, and then do it in the back yard or in the
street.
DUSTING.
This vexed question occupied much time of the Committee, and gave
great trouble to the Inspectors, who, in consequence of the numerous
complaints, were obliged to look after the Contractors; this greatly
impeded the carrying out of their other duties.
In conclusion, I have to thank the Yestry and Members of the Sanitary
Committee for their co-operation and support.
I have the honour to remain,
Gehtlehen,
Yours obediently,
THOS. SARYIS, M.D.,
Medical Officer of Health.
