Sanitary Proceedings.
The Committee met frequently during the year, sometimes twice a
week, the sittings generally lasting two or three hours, and where
nuisances were found to be of a grave kind, the Committee visited in
some cases whole streets; take, for instance, Kay and Faith Streets, late
John and Thomas Streets, Cambridge Road. The Committee met by
appointment the agent, and went over all the houses in both streets,
which were in a very bad condition. The agent was expostulated with
for not having complied with notices served, and the consequence was
that the work was done satisfactorily, how long it will remain so is
another matter, as the houses are principally inhabited by costermongers,
and I believe them to be more destructive to houses than any other class.
Pleasant Place, North Street, every house was visited by the Committee
and found to be in bad repair, the owner was written to impressing upon
him the necessity of complying with notices served, but he disregarded
them, and the consequence was that he was summoned to Worship Street,
and had to pay penalties and costs, also to do the work required.
Eastman Street, where many cases of fever occurred, was visited many
times by the Committee, the houses inspected, the water supply looked
to, and instructions given to the agent to have the houses cleansed
throughout. The neighbourhood around Friar's Mount was visited by
the Committee and notices served which have been complied with. I
could mention many other places, but apprehend these will suffice.
