SLAUGHTER HOUSES.
In some of these there were found defects which it was necessary to
have remedied, for they are continually getting out of order, so the
licenses were opposed conditionally ; this caused the owners to have the
work done satisfactorily, and in these cases the opposition was withdrawn,
and the licenses granted at the adjourned meeting.
There were two cases where the persons held both cow and slaughter
house licenses ; these were J. M. Richard, 381, Cambridge Road, and
Frederick Skinner, 18, Prospect Place. Now it was thought by the
Committee that it was unwise to allow both on one set of premises, and
the parties here waited on were told that their application for both licenses
would be opposed, but that they could elect whichever they like to keep.
Mr. Richard agreed to forego the slaughter house, but Mr. Skinner fought
his case, and succeeded in keeping both. There was one application for
renewal by James Bull, 368, Bethnal Green Road, for a license to a
slaughter house. It had been used as such for many years, but the license
had been allowed to lapse. The Sanitary Committee visited and found
the premises in good order and better constructed than many others;
they therefore did not oppose, but the magistrates did not hear the case
pending the making of bye-laws by the Metropolitan Board of Works, in
accordance with the powers given them by the Act recently passed.
