information is required at the rate of twopence an entry; and some
parishes have adopted that course. Had this been done in Bethnal Green
during the past twelve months, the outlay incurred would have been
£26 3s. 8d., which would have been divided amongst the four officers,
This is not a large sum to expend in a matter where life is concerned ;
and I earnestly hope we may shortly return to the old course.
THE MORTALITY FOR THE YEAR.
The Vital Statistics contained in this Report are taken from weekly
and quarterly returns, and the Annual Summary published by the
authority of the Registrar-General, and although they are scarcely prepared
in such an elaborate manner as they have been presented on former
occasions, I have every feeling of confidence that they will be found
to be equally accurate. The number of Births and Deaths recorded in
the parish during the year, was but little in excess of the number
registered in the preceding twelve months, and as the population had
increased, it would give a slight, and only slight, diminution in the rate
in each case. Thus the Births registered were 5152 against 5050 in the
preceding year, and the Deaths were 3142 as against 3129.
The following table gives the number of persons who succumbed to
Zymotic Diseases of various forms within the last and preceding twelve
