REPORT
OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE VESTRY
of
Saint Matthew, Bethnal Green,
From the 25th March, 1874, to the 25th March, 1875.
SCAVENGING.
In May the Vestry fined the Contractor for District No. 1, £5, and each
of the two other Contractors £10, for neglect in watering the roads.
In December the Contractor for the North Division was fined £6 10s. for
neglecting to sweep the streets. In January the Contractor for the East
Ward was fined £1 for one of his men sweeping mud into a gully. In
that month it was referred to a Committee of the whole Vestry to consider
"whether the Vestry should carry out the Dusting and Scavenging,
or which of them, under their own supervision, or whether any course
can be suggested for securing the more efficient performance of the work."
The Committee met, but a proposition that the work of Scavenging and
Dusting should, at the expiration of the current contracts, be done by the
Vestry, was negatived, and the Committee resolved to recommend that
advertisements be issued inviting tenders for the execution of the work
for a year from the 10th August, but that the form of tender should
provide for prices for Dusting separate from the prices for Scavenging and
Watering.
The Contractor for the North Division was again, in January, fined
£29 10s. for acts of neglect. In February, the same Contractor was
again fined £144, but the deduction of the fines from the instalments was
deferred, with a view of considering whether if thereafter the work
were well done the fines should be remitted.
