The Verdicts returned by Juries on the bodies of 47 male
and 29 female children and on 4-5 male and 32 female adults,
I have arranged numerically in the following way:—1 from
"refusing food," 1 from " want of medical treatment," 1 from
an "Incision in his breast and heart, self-inflicted," 1 from
"Exhaustion after her confinement," 1 from a " hole in the
throat, how caused, or by whom, unknown," 1 from "swallowing
by mistake Chloride of Zinc for Gin," 2 from " SelfDrowning,"
2 from " Wilful Murder," 4 from " Exposure
to cold and want of food and the necessaries of life," 4 from
" Injuries by falls and other violence," 5 from " Burns" and
from " Suffocation in a house when on fire," 7 from " SelfStrangulation,"
15 that were "Found Dead" in houses, public
streets, St. Peter's Church-yard, Victoria Park Cemetery and
on Eastern Counties Railway, 31 from " Suffocation," and
77 from " Sudden Deaths."
In 1857, the Inquests numbered 115; in 1858, 99; in 1859,
76; in 1860, 121; and in 1861, 153. Hence as the mean
of the 5 years is 113, there was an excess of 40 in 1861.
The Self-murderers consisted of a Servant aged 19, of a
Weaver aged 29, of a Cabinet Maker aged 30, of a Weaver
aged 42, of another Weaver aged 44, of a Bedstead Maker
aged 48, of a Costermonger aged 53, of a Cabinet Maker
aged 54, of a Weaver aged 55, and of a Cabinet Maker aged
65. The Servant and the Bedstead Maker committed suicide
in the Canal, the Costermonger, the Cabinet Makers and the
Weavers sacrificed their lives by Hanging and Incision of the
Heart.
Tfre average age—on dividing the years of life by those who
died—mounted up to 24.14 years in 1861. For 1857, the age
attained was 21.66 years; for 1858, 2264; for 1859, 22.17 ;
and for 1860, 22.21. Consequently in 1861, life had a bonus
of a year-and-a-half in Bethnal Green. In regard of length
the "probable lifetime" that each infant then born may reach,
