It is also proposed in conjunction with the Highways Engineers of the
Department of Technical and Contract Services to measure traffic noise
levels on the present road system and to build up a data bank which will be
essential when considering future road projects.
In order to obtain accurate measurement of noise, particularly in
regard to road traffic the Health Committee agreed a recommendation for tie
purchase of specialised noise equipment.
LEAD POISONING
During the course of the year five cases were kept under constant
surveillance where notifications were received of suspected lead poisoning
in children, all of whom were under the age of six.
In every case samples were taken of either garden soil, paintwork,
wallplaster or toys and in many instances analysis showed the lead content
to be well above the safety level.
The department is somewhat concerned over the number of instances where
lead poisoning was due to old paintwork being ingested by the child, and
parents were interviewed by health visitors on a number of occasions and
advised of precautions which should be taken to avoid such serious occurrences
in the home.
On three occasions old paintwork had to be stripped off and the premises
re-painted with lead free paint, and in another instance, due to the serious
nature of the case, rehousing had to be arranged.
