New Schools
Crusoe House School for maladjusted pupils opened in the spring, and by
the end of the year 40 children aged 5 years and upwards were in attendance.
Horizon School for Educationally Sub-Normal Children, formerly administered
by Islington, was transferred to Hackney. This school caters for 100
children aged between 5 years and 16 years. A small autistic unit is also
attached to Horizon School.
Dalston Mount School has been formed as a result of the amalgamation
of the former Dalston County and Mount Pleasant Schools. The new school
caters for 900 pupils from 11 years upwards.
Heal th Surveys
Annual Comprehensive Health Surveys are carried out hy the School
Nurses at which special attention is paid to the general health of the
child. Particular attention is paid to detecting any abnormalities of the
eyes, ears, nose and throat. Any evidence of postural or orthopaedic disorders
and any clear evidence of nervous disease or established psychological
disorder is also sought. While conducting the survey the School Nurse
also undertakes health education with each individual pupil on oral hygiene,
care of the skin, clothing etc.
Consultations take place with the head teacher regarding children who
appear to need referral for further examination hy the School Medical
Officer. Children who have frequent or prolonged absences from school;
appear not to be receiving adequate care; or fail to use spectacles, hearing
aids or any other remedial appliances which have been prescribed, are also
discussed so that the School Health, Education Welfare and Education
Services can be co-ordinated to ensure that the children's needs are met.
The School Nurse also carries out Selective Surveys on children requiring
more frequent observation.

On finding a child to be in need of treatment for a verminous condition,
the family are visited hy the School Nurse or Health Visitor in order to
provide the necessary advice to the parents and prevent the spread of infestation.
Ready for School Examinations
In an attempt to ensure that the children get the full benefit of
education at school entry, a comprehensive developmental examination of
children is offered at the Borough Child Health Centres. When the parents
put their child's name down at a particular school, they are given a letter
from the Medical Officer of Health by the Headmaster. It informs them that
