ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY MACHINES
Since early in 1968 when the then Minister of Health gave Local
Authorities general approval to make adaptations to homes of individuals
needing artificial kidney machines, 9 machines have been installed in private
homes.
During 1972 adaptations were carried out in 4 homes.
HEALTH EDUCATION
Health Education Activities, as in previous years, were under the
supervision of the Health Education Panel until the appointment of the
department's first Health Education Officer in September. The structure of
Health Education Organisation then changed to include a small Policy and
Planning Cbmmittee under the chairmanship of the Health Education Officer
with senior officers from each discipline within the department and a Working
Party under the supervision of the Health Education Officer with 'field'
health educators and a representative from the Council's Public Relations
Office and I.L.E.A. Divisional Education Office.
Health Education talks were given by appropriate staff in the department
to a wide range of community groups including school children, students from
colleges of further education, hospital nurses and members of various
mother's clubs. Two Principal School Medical Officers undertook a Health
Education Induction Course at Hackney Technical College for approximately
500 new entrant students. The Course included talks on smoking and health,
drugs, family planning, personal relationships, mental health and venereal
diseases.
The department participated in the Hackney Field Day at Clissold Park
in June, displays with films and slides were given on Child Development,
Dental Health and Foot Health. A Dental Health Education mobile caravan was
also on view, and aroused considerable interest for members of the public
visiting the various exhibits. Senior Malaysian students undertaking an
extra-mural course at London University visited John Scott Health Centre in
December. Their tour of the Health Centre was followed by a small Health
Education Display and film show.
Student Health Service
One of the Principal Medical Officers pays weekly visits to the Hackney
and Stoke Newington College and advises students on all aspects of health
and gives talks en specific topics from time to time.
RE-HOUSING ON MEDICAL GROUNDS
Twelve meetings took place during the year between representatives of
the Housing Department and the Health Department and 250 cases were discussed
to review what priority for rehousing on medical groups should be given.
