The recruitment of Health Visitors continued to be difficult throughout
1972. 11 student Health Visitors qualified which brought the total health
visiting staff to 34 including 7 Nursing Officers. There were 15 vacant
posts at the end of the year.
During the year the Council agreed to adopt recommendations of the
Working Party in management structures for the Local Authority Nursing
Services (referred to as the Mayston Report), which was set up by the
Department of Health and Social Security. Some of the recommendations
resulted in the Co-ordinating Nursing Officer being redesignated Chief
Nursing Officer, three posts of Senior Nursing Officer being redesignated
Area Nursing Officer and the posts of Centre Superintendent were redesignated
to that of Nursing Officer with the establishment being reduced by one post.
The introduction of the free Family Planning Service made additional
demands on the existing staff.
The closure of the hostel at Brooke Road, a temporary hostel brought
into use in 1968, but with a limited life because it was in a redevelopment
area proved a further handicap to recruitment.
The general practitioner attachment scheme continued although it was
not possible to extend it further due to the prevailing staffing difficulties.
CO-OPERATION WITH THE HOSPITAL SERVICE
Links continued to be forged between the Local Authority and the
Hospitals at all levels. The Medical Officer of Health and members of the
Council serve on the Hackney Group Hospital Management Committee, and the
Chairman of the Health Committee is a member of the Board of Governors of
St. Bartholomew" s Hospital.
The Medical Officer of Health is a member of the Joint Hospital Services
Committee for Hackney and the City of London, and the Joint Study Group on
Child Care of the Joint Hospital Services Committee for Tbwer Hamlets,
Hackney and the City of London.
