MIDWIFERY SERVICE
The total number of home confinements during theyear was 131 (including
2 stillbirths). There were 193 planned early discharges from hospitals
before the 10th day and 330 unplanned early discharges.
This again shows a drastic reduction in the number of home confinements
but a significant increase in the number of early hospital discharges before
the 10th day, particularly in unplanned discharges. However, in accordance
with the Peel Report, the district midwives increased their co-operation
with the hospital services and participated in 121 hospital deliveries.
The district midwives were involved in 504 assessments and they also
took part in the following up of 46 cases who did not attend the Hackney
Ante-natal Clinic.
576 Guthrie Tests to establish whether phenylketonuria might be present
were also undertaken.
