Diphtheria
During March two children who reside in the London Borough of Wandsworth
were found to be carriers of the diphtheria bacillus. Four children at the same
school were subsequently found to be harbouring the organism Corynebacterium
Diphtheriae, Mitis strain. It was ascertained that the grandmother, living in
the same house, was employed in a firm in Hackney. A visit was therefore paid
by a Principal Medical Officer and a Senior Nursing Officer. Nose and throat
swabs were taken from 15 possible contacts and were all subsequently reported
negative for diphtheria.
Influenza
During the autumn, staff at day nurseries, training centres, day centres,
home helps who work for 30 hours or more a week, district nurses and midwives
were given vaccination against influena
