Last year I drew attention to the infant mortality rate of 22.2 per 1,000
live births which was above the national average, but comparable with other
London Boroughs. This year the rate has fallen to 19.9 but it is still higher
than the rate for England and Wales.
The total number of infant deaths fell from 127 to 107 but the number of
babies who survived the first week and yet died during the first year of life
dropped only from 48 to 44.
