(b) WOMEN'S VOLUNTARY SERVICES. This organisation again provided many
services of very real value to the community, and its activities included the
following:-
Blood transfusion sessions in Hackney Hospital
Trolley library service at the Hackney Hospital
Tea trolley service at the German Hospital
Visits to patients in Hospital
Assistance to Old Age Pensioners
Assistance to the Blind
Arrangements for assisted holidays for children
and old age pensioners
Escort journeys
Collection and distribution of clothing at home
and abroad for needy persons
Civil Defence
(d) BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY. The North East Area Division covers the
Boroughs of Hackney, Stoke Newington, Bethnal Green and Shoreditch and has its
headquarters at 92, Dalston Lane, E.8. 496 items of sick-room equipment were
lent at the request of Doctors, Hospitals and District Nurses during the year.
Hie Centre is also used for training children and adults in First Aid, Nursing
and Mothercraft.
(e) HACKNEY, SHOREDITCH, STOKE NEWINGTON AND DISTRICT DIABETIC CLUB. This
Club, which is affiliated to the British Diabetic Association, held meetings
each month throughout the year for diabetics and friends. Talks on topical
subjects and some of special medical interest were given, with films
and discussions. Various social events were also organised.
(f) THE FAMILY PLANNING ASSOCIATION continued to hold clinics on Monday
and Wednesday evenings at the London County Council Welfare Centre situated at
28, Lower Clapton Road, E.5. The clinics now prescribe and dispense oral
contraceptives and are taking cervical smears from patients over the age of 30
for the early detection of cancer.
(g) BRITISH HOME FOR DEAF AND DUMB WOMEN. This home at 26. Clapton Common,
Upper Clapton Road, E. 5, housed 23 deaf and dumb residents. Fourteen of the
residents spent a fortnight s holiday at the Clapton Mission Holiday Home at
Heme Bay and nine had holidays with relatives or friends.

(c) ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE. The strength of the No. 5 Hackney Ambulance Division remained at 29 Officers and Members. The hours of duty performed were as shown below:-
