WELFARE OF AGED PERSONS
As was reported in my Annual Report for the previous year, the Council,
for the purpose of implementing the new powers contained in the National
Assistant Act 1948 (Amendment) Act, 1962, assumed responsibility for the
Meals on Wheels service previously provided by the Hackney Association for the
Welfare of Old People. To enable this service to be extended two "Commer Cob"
vehicles, each vehicle being fitted with five containers (ten meals per
container) and electrical heating apparatus, and thus being able to carry 50
hot meals at a time, were ordered. These two vans were delivered on the 10th
January, 1963 and four part-time Driver/Attendants were engaged. To meet the
increasing demand for these meals a further van was ordered, which was delivered
in June 1963, and two additional part-time Driver/Attendants were employed,
making a total of six at the end of the year.
