Vacant Sites. The number of vacant sites in the Borough decreased during
the year twelve sites and part of six other sites shown in the Department's
records at the end of 1962 were built over, but a further six sites were
created by demolition.
Of the existing 108 sites, thirteen are under the control of the Council,
and used as allotments, and ten in private ownership are utilised for the
parking or storage of cars. Complaints relating to 28 sites were received.
Regular inspections of sites have been carried out by Public Health
Inspectors, and 68 were found to be in a condition which required no action
by this Department. As in previous years, the majority of nuisances on
vacant sites arose from the dumping of refuse, mattresses and all kinds of
unwanted household debris, which has been dealt with by the Department by
burning and burying on the site, or by removal Clearances were effected
in 59 instances in respect of 40 sites, certain sites having had to be
cleared frequently.
The work carried out by the Public Health Inspectors, other than in
relation to food premises, is summarised as follows:-
