(d) BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY. This Society organised 40 training courses
in First Aid, Nursing and Mothercraft for the general public, schools and
persons in industry. There was an increased demand for escort duties,
transfers of invalids, and for nursing room requisites.
(e) HACKNEY, SHOREDITCH, STOKE NEWINGTON AND DISTRICT DIABETIC CLDB.
This Club held meetings each month throughout the year when talks on subjects
of topical interest, and also on those of special medical interest to the
members were given. Various social events were also organised,
(f) THE FAMILY PLANNING ASSOCIATION continued to hold clinics on Monday
and Wednesday evenings at the London County Council Welfare Centre situated at
28, Lower Clapton Road, E.5.
(g) HACKNEY AND STOKE NEWINGTON DEANERY MORAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION
This Association is affiliated to the London Diocesan Council for Moral Welfare
Work. "During the past year 192 new cases have been helped, as against 211
for the same period last year. There were 140 maternity cases, which together
with the aftercare of 32 Mothers and Babies, made a total of 172., and the rest
were Matrimonial and Personal problems. Most of the Maternity cases were
between the ages of 15 and 19 years, and 58 of the girls went into Mother and
Baby homes. Of the 140 Maternity cases, five babies were still-born, 41
babies went for Adoption, including 3 sets of twins, ten into Residential
Nurseries, twelve to be cared for by Foster Parents, two girls married the
putative fathers and kept their babies, and the rest are living in accommodation
of their own, or in the homes of relatives,"
(b) WOMEN'S VOLUNTARY SERVICES This organisation again provided many
services of very real value to the community, and its activities included the
following Trolley library service at the Hackney Hospital
Tea trolley service at the German Hospital
Visits to patients in Hospital
Assistance to Old Age Pensioners
Assistance to the Blind
Arrangements for assisted holidays for children
and old age pensioners
Escort journeys
Collection and distribution of clothing at home
and abroad for needy persons

(c) ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE. The membership of the No. 5 Hackney Ambulance Division was 29, one more than in the previous year. The hours of

duty performed were as shown below:-
