SOCIAL CONDITIONS AND VITAL STATISTICS
Hackney, one of the County of London's twenty-eight metropolitan
boroughs is situate in the north-eastern part of the County. The
Metropolitan Boroughs of Shoreditch, Bethnal Green and Poplar lie to the
south, the Metropolitan Boroughs of Islington and Stoke Newington to the
west, the Municipal Borough of Tottenham to the north, and the Boroughs of
Walthamstow and Leyton form the eastern boundaries. The total area of the
borough is some 3,287 acres, of which some 628 66 are public open spaces.
The Borough is residential as well as industrial in character, and is
divided into sixteen Wards for Local Government electoral purposes, each
Ward being represented by three Councillors.
The rateable value at the 1st April was £2 694 627 and the product of
a penny rate for the financial year 1961-62 was estimated to be £10 699
The number of inhabited hereditaments at the end of the year was 41 583

The population of the Borough as enumerated at the Census of 1931 was
215 333 (Males 99 794 and Females 115 539).
